Hai District Administrative Secretary Upendo Wella has urged citizens in the district to contribute in the government’s efforts on environmental preservation by planting trees and making sure that the trees grow to serve their purpose.
Wella has said this in the celebrations to commemorate World Environment Day held at Chemka village where there is a natural hot-spring.
Wella led a number of leaders and citizens in planting trees around the hot spring and ordered Chemka residents to make sure that the trees planted do survive and that many more trees are to be planted at the site.
She also advised the people to embrace the spirit of planting trees and that every person should plant at least eight trees annually in order to combat the current situation and improve the environment in the district.
Reading the statement of the day, Environment Officer Alfred Njegite said environment preservation aims at protecting the world against natural disasters among them are drought, lack of pastures and other disasters that endanger life of people and other living organisms.
He added that environmental preservation improves natural and ecological balance to different things that support life to living organisms that depend on each other.
On his side; Hai District Executive Director Yohana Sintoo has acknowledged Chemka village elders for preserving and protecting the hot spring and insisted all citizens to cooperate in environment preservation and each and every person should be a protector of the environment for the benefit of the current and the next generations.
The world environment day was celebrated at Chemka village by planting more than one hundred trees around the hot spring which is one of the many tourist attractions found in Hai district.
